SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A man is accused of killing another man and a dog at a home in Spartanburg County early Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened around 12:40 a.m. on Mt. Olive Road near Cowpens, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said they arrived to find David Franklin Shrewsbury, 44, with a gunshot wound, along with a mother and son.

“Deputies began interviewing the other parties involved, they learned there was a prior relationship between the female witness and the male victim,” said Corporal John Burgess, with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Shrewsbury was taken to the hospital where he died.

Deputies said they also recovered the weapon used in the shooting.

The son, identified as 28-year-old Brandon Tyler Crocker, was later arrested and charged with murder, ill treatment of animals, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Crocker had his bond hearing Tuesday night.

“Mr. Crocker, because of the violent nature of this crime, I’m going to deny bond, now that doesn’t mean you can’t get bond, it just has to come from a circuit court judge,” said the magistrate judge.

According to warrants, Crocker shot and killed both the Shrewsbury and a dog with a shotgun.

Burgess said this type of incident is not common.

“Typically, we don’t get those type of incidents together, typically we don’t get animals being injured during the commission of a crime either,” he said.
